Melissa's Reflection

 Melissa Rios

Our class consisted of splitting up into three groups and discussing various important topics. Each of these groups created extremely educative while still being aesthetically pleasing Presentations. With the help of PowerPoint, Group one, which consisted of Angeline Pierre, Brian Cuervo, Alexandra Dolly, Jose Lucas, GC Lopez, Camila Lima, Carlos Garcia, Celin Garcia, and Jordan Laine, spoke on intercultural communications, which is chapter 3. I enjoyed how they spoke on the realities of different cultures and included examples of cultures throughout history. Moreover, the differences between race and ethnicity were very well explained by Angeline. However, I feel that it lacked a little bit of creativity and pictures, maybe a couple more examples would have made it that much more interesting. Brian then explains the topic of sexual orientation and how religion and status affect these types of subjects. Disability and explanations about our barriers between each other as well as personal examples made their presentation relatable and allowed their audience to connect to their topics. I found it very interesting how they explained the reality of everyday life, such as sex, religion, gender, and social class can influence one's opinions. Also, how they wrote strategies to better communicate with each other. However, I felt that this group in their presentation time was a little fast pace for me. Even though it was Time efficient since we were only supposed to present one per class. I would also like to note that during my group's presentation as well as anyone having an issue, Our professor was super professional and did not make anyone feel bad for any inconvenience. I felt that this was extremely kind and deserved to be noted in our presentation overview blog. Moving on to Group 2, which I was part of, our topic was communicating in groups. I felt that this was a very important topic since all of the groups were in a way using the methods we spoke about. My group members were Hailey Fernandez, Maria De Sousa, Christian Rodriguez, Isabela Zorra, Joshua Espinoza, Jonathan Brito, Kylie Garcia, and Katherine Rodriguez. I'm very proud to say that my team really took their time to have as many visuals as well as explanations. We also decided to add low yet audible music to the back to add a special touch to the PowerPoint. Furthermore, we describe how a team comes together for a common purpose and how important communication is. Also, how family can also be characterized as a group, which I was unaware of. I also liked how support groups were added which allows the audience to be reminded that no matter their personal problems groups and help are out there. I spoke about virtual groups which I felt is key due to our online class. I also explained how important communication can be in these certain types of groups. I enjoyed how coherent our and the others groups' videos were. Also, this project allowed me as well as my group members to better communicate and have our project not be simply a PowerPoint but let it be incorporated into how we work. Moreover, Kylie and Katherine also explained how conflicts can also arise in groups. Their view on how culture can also be a reason for conflict due to not interpreting others due to upbringing and norms was extremely educative. I would like to note that their transitions really stood out to me and even though I was part of the group as a whole we did end up splitting up with those who had a common slide with us, which allowed us to present together for the first time as a type of "surprise". I loved how we were able to blend our presentation and my teammates did very well with their communication as well as an even pace for the audience. Continuing Group three, their chapter was on Group leadership and Problem-solving. I felt that their Presentation was very simple yet right to the point. This group's transitions as well as slides also stood out to me, not only did they have creative depiction pictures but also fun little twists to their slides. This group's members were Michelle Penton, Natalie Bermudez, Shaeen Charles, Shelsia Aragon, Stephanie Vargas, Vienna Fonseca, Sebastian Holder, and Suzana Castillo. Their presentation caught my attention due to how simplistic it was. I feel that Suzan's points on leadership and task roles were very well explained and made it easy for me to understand. Most of their slides included about two pictures, which like group one I feel gave it more of a serious feel. I personally, love a clean look but compared to the past two presentations I feel this made it look a little dull in comparison. However, their amount of information made up for it. I personally that Shaeen maybe could've added a couple more points of information. Also, I would like to highlight Sebastian's explanation of the group's weaknesses and advantages was very professionally explained and educative at the same time. This might have stood out to me since our slides were also on communications. Moreover, this also caught my attention because I love to see how even though weaknesses are seen as a disadvantage its realistic to speak on how they can occur, and most defiantly in groups and teams working together. Overall I feel that Group two was the most aesthetically put together, hoverer, Group 3 made it a very clean looking presentation. I liked how well-spoken most of Group One members were and how I noticed some of Groups 1 and 3 had members reading off of sticky notes. This project had everyone in the class involved and able to participate which I feel is a very big part of SPC1017. I also loved how each team made their audience feel as if they were learning something new which we were, but it allowed for us to get involved and have a different perspective on how to deal with real-world problems.
